    The Money Is In The List?

    It’s interesting that more and more people are always quoting the phrase “the money is in the list”, but few every figure out how to get the money out of the list they build.

    Over the last 5 years, I’ve spoken with many new Internet marketers that struggle with the concept of list building.  They’re not sure where to start, how to start and what to do. In fact, I’ve recently asked a group of full time Internet marketers and surprisingly, 80% had a list of 500 or less subscribers.

    Is that bad? Well, yes and no. It’s not bad if that’s a list of 500 buyers, or even 100 buyers. It’s not bad if you’re providing that list with good content, providing value and able to monetize that list.

    When I first started back in 2005 I fell in to the same trap. Instead of continually provide good, helpful content on a regular basis, I slipped into a “pitch mode”. Why? Because I was told that the money was in the list and I had to sell to them continuously. I can now tell you from personal experience, this doesn’t work.

    When you’re building your list, you have to do a few things first. Obviously, you need to have something worthwhile to attract the person. So, you give away something cool, helpful and good.

    Here’s where most people make their first mistake. They give away crap. Nothing good. Nothing really helpful. They are basically keeping the good stuff back to “sell” to them later. You should be doing just the opposite. Give something really helpful away. Maybe not your biggest trick, but one of the better ones… Keep them engaged.

    Next, you need to give them some more cool stuff. List building is about relationship building. Engaging the subscriber and getting them to understand who you are and trust you. People are not going to trust people that are in their face with their hands out, looking for cash. It just doesn’t work that way.

    After you’ve been helpful, given some cool stuff to them, then…and only then… will you begin to build some trust. Give them something cool, and helpful, they are likely to buy something you recommend. 

    Sometimes it just takes one of those ‘Ah-Ha’ moments to snap back into reality and see what’s going on around you.

    I’ve recently remembered exactly why I got into online marketing and why I’ve created products that help other marketers… it was about giving back and teaching others. 

    If you’re thinking about ways to build your list, then start with thinking about what you can give away that’s truly worthwhile and helpful to the subscriber. It’s the little things you give away that will bring the money back to you.

    This stuff works.

    Suffering From ‘Analysis Paralysis’?

    Have you ever had this happen?

    You’re working on something. Maybe brainstorming new ideas, replying to an email, a new blog post or creating some funky new graphics for your website. Then Skype or Twitter pops up. Or you see a news article on MSN news that catches your attention. Or you remember you need to do this. Or Gmail pops up… so you check your email.

    Next thing you know, you’re on a goose chase of epic proportions. Before you know it, an hour or two passes and you’ve completely forgotten what you set out to do.

    Does this sound familiar?

    I can’t stress this enough, but you need to focus, focus and focus some more, this is especially true when you are working for yourself and you don’t have anyone breathing down your neck for results.

    If you’re goal is to make a few thousand a month, I guess you could still do that while pottering about… but if you’re looking for consistent  5 or 6 figure weekly paychecks… or a Ferrari parked outside your house, then I’m afraid you need alot more self-discipline. You choose.

    Maybe there also been times when you KNOW what you want but can’t decide what to do or how to do it and you’re stuck in the ‘analysis paralysis’ mode?

    Maybe you feel stuck and don’t know how to get unstuck… or you’d just really like to get more focused on what will actually get you the results you want.

    If that’s the case then I, again, know how you feel… and you’re not alone. 

    In talking to the people on my list, I find that overwhelm is one of the biggest issues. Not having enough time. Having too much to do and too much to learn.

    Imagine you had a magic wand. And you could wave it and have focus, clarity and get rid of a significant degree of the overwhelm.

    This is what YourNetBiz is all about.

    Now let me stress that I’m not a marketing God. I don’t pretend to be. I get distracted like anyone else. I struggle daily with trying to do too much, but YourNetBiz takes out the majority of the ‘donkey work’ for me.

    If I ever wanted to make a bit more money, I’ll create a simple webpage, pick out some products and drive traffic to it. That’s it.

    Invariably, people who buy my products always become intrigued with what I do and how they can do the same.

    That’s when they speak with my Personal Business Assistant and they do a great job in signing them up amongst other things.

     I just collect the money. And so should you.

    Focus On The Fundamentals

    I have a friend who is every internet marketers dream.

    So far, he’s bought Frank Kern’s List Control… George Brown’s Traffic Ultimatum… Ryan Deiss’s Facebook Adpower… and he was a moments away from adding Jeff Johnson’s Traffic Voodoo to his collection …until I intervened.

    Okay, so he’s an extreme case, but are you guilty of this too from time to time? Have you bought something on the spur of the moment that’s still gathering dust on your hard drive? Or perhaps some physical products that’s still wrapped in polystyrene?

     There will always be a release of new products each week, all promising you something bigger, better, faster and shinier than the last. Some are pretty good and some are lousy but that’s not why I stopped my friend from buying another yet another course.

    You see, there has to come to a point when you stop buying more education and instead use what you already have. If you’re already making money and you’re just looking for a little nugget of information here and there to plug into your existing business, then by all means – continue to invest in training products.

    Too many people get side tracked with so much stuff out there, getting pulled in so many directions and as a result – information overload, which is the main reason why newbies fail.

    Focus on only one thing at a time. When, and only when you’ve made some money from that one thing - THEN move on to the next.

    Let’s face it, the bulk of online business success comes down to some basic FUNDAMENTALS:

    1.  Finding a hungry market to provide to

    2.  Making offers to that market

    3.  Driving quality, targeted traffic for that market

    4.  Building an email list so you can follow-up with prospects and to promote future products.

    That’s it.

    Don’t complicate things and focus on the fundamentals.

    Learn From Cheryl Cole

    I was picking up my morning paper today at Tesco’s and just happened to glance across the magazine section when I noticed a headline a magazine jumped straight at me:

     “Ashley’s secret hold over Cheryl…”

    Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of weeks, you’ll know I’m of course talking about Cheryl dumping Ashley Cole over his alleged sex text and flings.

    I don’t do gossip magazines or tabloids but I must admit this particular headline intrigued me somewhat, enough for me to promptly flick through the pages to see what this ‘secret hold’ was – only to find out it was in reference to Cheryl’s tattoo. She has a “Mrs C” etched on the back of her neck.

    No big scandal but I thought the play on words were brilliant – marketing at its best.

    Do you think the magazine would have sold as many copies if the headline said:

    “Cheryl lasers off tattoo…”

    Not in a million years, because it isn’t compelling, interesting and it doesn’t evoke any interest.

    Which brings me to today’s lesson: Creating compelling and powerful headlines.

    You only have 3-4 seconds to capture your prospect’s interest, and that’s being generous. Often, it’s just one or two seconds.

    You must capture your prospect’s interest immediately, or you’ve lost the chance to ‘sell’ to him or her. You could spend hours writing the best, most descriptive, most appealing, most persuasive sales description, but unless you first capture your prospect’s interest your efforts are futile.

    90 percent of the reason customers and prospects respond to a sales message is because of what they have read, heard or seen in the headline or opening statement.

    I stopped and picked up the magazine (I think it was Heat) only because the headline caught my interest. Not the editorial. Your customers will respond to your sales message for the same reason.

    They will only read or listen to your offer if you give them a powerful, interesting headline, so remember: 90 percent of response you get is because of your headline.

    And don’t tattoo your neck.

    Curb Spending Impulses

    “Spend less than you earn”… mum always told me. Thanks mum.

    I could teach you every technique and strategy to make money online but if you can’t control your spending habit, you’ll be going around in circles for a long time.

    I’m amazed how many people ignore this simple but most golden of all golden rules of becoming rich. You have to live within your means. Control your spending.

    The surest way to scupper your wealth creation is to go out and spend everything you earn or receive (and a bit more just for good measure). This particular addiction is very strong in me. I had a habit of changing cars every 6 months, until I sat down and worked out just how much  I was losing each year.

    I’ve stopped now. And you have to resist too if you are going to turn what little you have into a bigger something, Forget notions of new cars and holidays in the sun – at least for now. You are going to turn into a bit of a Scrooge for a while, hanging on to what you’ve got in order to prepare for the future when you will have so much more.

    This means you have to control your urges.

    Look, I’m going to let you in on a secret. Prosperity is a race, a prize, a winning line. We all set out wanting to race towards it, claim it. Some can’t be bothered to make it to the starting line because they are so weighed down with unhelpful beliefs that floor them before they start. And a whole lot of people fall by the way side from laziness early on. And many more fail to make the grade because they get daunted by the hard work needed.

    And still more at this point, where you’re at now, stumble because they need to give in to temptation to spend, spend, spend like there’s no tomorrow.

    Well there is a tomorrow and it comes quickly enough. And that shiny new car now looks sad and rusty, the holiday is gone with only a few snapshots of people and places you can’t even remember and the new clothes are outgrown and unworn.

    The simple truth is the rich know how to control their spending urges – that’s why they’re rich. When they need to tight their belts they can do it.

    And you need to do it too, tighten your belt that it. In fact what you need is to not loosen it in the first place.
